Yet More Animals
Noble Creatures
The kangaroo, and wombat too
Are noble creatures through and through
The roo can, in a single bound
Leap the wombat on the ground!
Without it even saying ouch
The wombat, it can dig its way
Through two foot three or more of clay
Give or take a centimetre
As diggers go, a true world-beater
You could say it’s no slouch
These animals enjoy renown
For jumping up and digging down
And share another trait to boot:
The tourists think they’re really cute
And oh yeah, they’ve both got a pouch
Know Your Elephants
Each species of the elephant
Has much in common with its kin
Each has a trunk, likes eating plant
And has a grey and wrinkled skin
The tusks are large on either kind
There’s not much difference either way
And both, it’s said, can keep in mind
Every word they hear you say
So how d’you tell ’em apart, really?
The trick’s so easy, anyone can
Just ask each one to sing in Swahili
The Asian can’t, but the African
Fruits de Mer
The sperm whale dines down in the deep
On endless meals of giant squid
She’ll eat her fill, and still she’ll keep
Some squid leftover for her kid
And if a squad of squid should squirt
Her hungry tongue with their black ink
Why, that just means she gets a spurt
Of cool refreshing squid-juice drink
