Happy new year from Edinburgh, where fireworks will soon be lighting up over the castle—seen above a few days before Christmas.

I can’t believe I’ve neglected this blog even more in the second half of 2011 than the first; with a family member visiting over Christmas, there wasn’t even the chance of a last-minute catch-up run. Have to do something about that. If only there were some kind of collective resolution-making ritual...

Our dear little daughter, born on my mother’s birthday. Smaller than her brother was, but every bit as wonderful.

She isn’t the reason I haven’t been posting here much—that was the craziest four months of my working life—but she might be for the next while.
