Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

USA, 1989, PG, 101 mins. Director: Joe Johnston. Stars: Rick Moranis, Marcia Strassman, Jared Rushton, Amy O'Neill.

Honey, I Shrunk The Kids swept to box-office success a few years ago on the strength of an engagingly silly title, but there turned out to be a bit more to it than that: it boasts some terrific special effects, and it evokes the fun of Disney family films of old (go on, you loved 'em... well, when you were nine, anyway). Rick Moranis clocks in a frantic performance as the bumbling inventor and father who manages to, uh, you know... and the film has to be the only one in which a life-sized ant serves as a satisfyingly scary monster (giant mutant ants from 1950s B-grade science fiction films don't count).

Honey, I Blew Up the Kid

USA, 1992, G, 93 mins. Director: Randal Kleiser. Stars: Rick Moranis, Marcia Strassman, Lloyd Bridges, John Shea, Robert Oliveri.

In the inevitable sequel, Moranis accidentally turns his toddler into a Kid Kong. Will part three be titled Honey, I Left the Kids Exactly the Right Size?
