May. Pablo Picasso, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, 1907. I first saw this landmark painting in art books in the early 1980s. The contrast between printed page and the monumental painting itself, when I finally saw it in the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1992, could hardly have been greater.
