Black Dogs

You May Already Be a Winner

Congratulations! You have failed
The only available ship has sailed
From the dock, and you’re not on it

You’ve left your future on the bonnet
Of your car, and driven off
You’re worse off than a Romanoff

If you were required now to choose a
Username, I’d go with “loser”
With a password of “u suck”
You’re in the shit
You’re out of luck

There really is no point in going on
You’ve reaped what you were sowing
Just try and get it through your brain
Your dance is done
It’s time for rain

Since You Asked

So how are you? you ask. Oh, fine
Though really I should say depressed
I don’t, ’cause I don’t want to whine
That my life’s in a rotten mess
A steep and relentless decline

Good, good, you nod, not knowing that
It’s bad, you sod; its line is flat
It’s only because I’m polite
That I can bear to stand the sight
Of cheeriness upon your face
Goodwill is such a foreign place

What’s wrong, you wonder. Does it matter?
It’s relative: it might seem right
To you; you’re so together. Don’t flatter
Yourself; your day will turn to night
You’ll see your crystal dreams all shatter

Go on, get lost, leave me alone
Go find a grimace of your own
I’ve dug this pit in which I lie
Now let me sit in it and die
Piss off, you well-adjusted creep!
The miserable are trying to weep

Beyond

No body can live beyond ninety or so
No heart can survive when its blood runs slow
No mind can outlast the life it has made
No matter; no memory left now to fade

No tunnel of light at the moment of death
No soul that escapes on your final breath
No spirit departing to be with the Lord
No guardian angel with fiery sword

No paradise found at the end of it all
No heavenly flight, or hellish fall
No God, no good, no evil, no sin
No external judge of your life within

No point to it all beyond what you’ve done
No time for regrets, except for just one
No way to defend against your greatest fear
No one will remember that you were here

Black Dog

Churchill called it his black dog
But sometimes friendly dogs are black
So when the air is thick with fog
Say welcome, Rover
Welcome back

Good boy!
